I had the unexpected luck to go on TDY (temporary duty) with the military here for three weeks in September 2000. I found it to be the most enchanting place I’d ever been, and I still do. I want to go back one day. I always say that, if for some odd reason, I ever marry again, this would be my choice for where we would have our honeymoon. The nearby Alps are simply breathtaking and all of Switzerland is a living, breathing postcard that I wish I could stick inside my pocket and take with me always. The people are friendly, and the food is hearty and tasty, esp. nice when it’s winter and you can get hot roasted chestnuts from the street vendors. Yes, it is my favorite place in the world, so far.
I was a journalist in the active U.S. Army when I went before, and I had the amazing chance to ride on a slow, lazy boat ride across the river with some Swiss troops who fed us fondue and wine until we were fat and lazy. Oh, it was wonderful and the hospitality was unparalleled.
I stayed in the Waldorf Astoria while there.
However, haha, don’t be like me and think you can get too close to the pretty swans — they are not so charming when you get too close!
