Linköping aka: Linkoping

Was a nice place to visit, and I enjoyed my time there, but I don@t think I would go back as a tourist.

I have friends in Linköping, and I like to go visit every now and then. Last time was in the summer of 2006 during a hitchhiking tour of Sweden. We spent our days mostly just hanging out in the park near the cathedral and in the nights we twirled fire poi…
I had a lot of trouble finding a good spot to hitchhike south from Linköping, but eventually I did and got picked up. However, I didn’t get very far and had to spend the night in the woods outside some shithole called Mjölby! ;)

I’ve studied here for almost four years and as of writing this worked here for almost one year. Linköping is a nice city that got almost everything you could ever want without being so big it’s cumbersome to travel around in it. With stores focused around two places in town with good bus connections between them it’s easy to go shopping.

For those, like me, who enjoy motor sports we got a motor arena in the outskirts with both tarmac and dirt tracks where you can go to see racing events of different kinds or to just drive some gokart with your friends. A stone toss away lies Mantor with it’s famous track Mantorp Park (where the season finale of the STCC racing event) takes place.

If you ever feel the need to get to a larger city you can easily get to Stockholm in under two hours by train (90min with the faster one) or down to Malmö in less then three hours.

I highly recommend paying Linköping a visit if you get a chance, bringing friends is always a good suggestion. We might not have incredible amounts of “must see” places here, but there is plenty of stuff to do without haivng to spend half a day traveling to get there. :)

Nice, clean town with plenty to see – at least for a day or two. Home of SAAB aircraft.

We attended an event in ‘the Backside of Linköping’ and apart from being next to the smelly waste processing plant, it was very nice. On our last day we had time to kill before the train and had a walk into town. Lovely – magnificent cathedral, nice squares… I would certainly visit again.

Don’t really know about the touristy point of view but seeing as how I lived here for around 19 years and been to a whole lot of cities in Sweden I can safely say that although only the fourth (in population) it has a warmth and charm that I believe Stockholm (having lived there for over a year) don’t have. (Lund an Malmö is perhaps even better though..)
