The Bilbainos didn’t appear the most friendly of people, but I could understand given their cultural history that my having to approach them in Castilian (or English) wasn’t the best icebreaker. Bilbao is an industrial city, and most people seem to go there for the Guggenheim. San Sebastian is more attractive. However, the Guggenheim is genuinely impressive, and if you like seafood there are some superb restaurants. Also, the Basques have probably the most interesting cultural history of anywhere in the world.

There’s way more to Bilbao than Guggenheim.

Agosto 2006-

I expected a big shiny tourist trap… instead the city is so much more. Old industrial town enjoying good days and it’s hard earned prosperity! Real people in a real city! Quite nice.

Go to the old town (for example to Victor Montes in Plaza Nueva) to have a beer or wine and some pinchos before lunch time.

The summer fest is awesome. Lots of people around.

And the Guggenheim is so cool !

This museam is really something. Get the audio commentary.. its quite funny.
