Bologna

Let me tell you about the part I didn’t imagine: Rain. I stayed in Modena for most of a week, and made several attemps to visit Bologna. But every time I got on the train, it started raining. Which could explain one of the most conspicuous architectural features of the city: Miles and miles of arcades.

As a native son of Seattle I can hardly condemn Bologna for its raininess. But it did somewhat impede my attempts to get to know it. I’ll try again some day.

I like the feel of this place – good people, great food and ice-cream and the porticoes are a revelation.

I didn’t enjoy my short visit to Bologna very much, but I’m not entirely sure why. Its not an ugly city by any means, but I just didn’t have very much fun. I might have to return in the future, but its not on the top of my list.

Beautiful city. Exciting to drive in. Better if you have a moto. Don’t miss the Ducati factory in Borgo Panigale.

Just read John Grisham’s latest novel. His vivid description of Bologna made it sound like an ideal place to spend eternity.

If you want to make a culinary trip to Italy, Bologna is unmissable. It’s a great town to wander around (under the famous porticoes), discovering amazing restaurants serving fantastic local cuisine.

I recommend travelling around October and November when it’s truffle season. :-)

But no matter when you go, Bologna never gets as filled with tourists as, say, Florence. One of Italy’s best kept secrets.
