A review of this place: Heidelberg

I visited the town twice in short succession: in April 2007 to visit my friend Sigrid, who lives there and in June 2007 because of our annual works outing, which led us to Heidelberg this time. lol
Heidelberg is a nice, old town at the river Neckar in a valley surrounded by woods with lots of beautiful houses and places. But what impressed me most about Heidelberg was/is the Heidelberger Schloß (see my entry about that ;)), which is Germany’s most popular castle ruin. :)

How this place changed my life

I went on a 2 week trip to Europe with my University, including Madrid, Paris, Frankfurt/Heidelberg and Brussels. I loved the hospitality I was greeted with in Heidelberg. The architecture is beautiful, as is the natural landscape. I felt a sense of romance here (perhaps even more than when I was in Paris). I really felt like this is a place I must return to with someone I love! Beautiful city…

First time i went here was while on holiday with my parents. I always remembered it as a nice place.
As it is on our way between Holland and Italy, yes we drive, I suggested it as lunch brake on one of trips, to show it to my husband and kids. They loved it.

A review of this place

I’ve spent 10 months in Heidelberg as a student ( hurra for the Erasmus programme!). It’s such a lovely place, it doesn’t even seem real. The main street is so cute that I always had the feeling to be in Disneyland! And the University was great. It’s the one in the city center as I was a law student (I really can’t remember it’s name). I have never seen such a great library! I could spend hours just wandering in this place… Gosh, I miss Germany!

The first time I went to this place

Went on a school tour. Heidelberg was the nicest place (and cologne). Food all over was rotten, especially as a vegetarian. Great fun though!

Like a dream that became reality - Heidelberg and its river, the Neckar

I was stationed here as a National Guard member from 1999 to 2000 and absolutely loved it. It was the first foreign country I ever visited and I fell in love with Germany; I’ve never changed my mind since then. Heidelberg and it’s charming, winding river, the Neckar, is magical. Mark Twain even was here before and wrote about it.

I lived in the vicinity of Rohrback when I was there and did much exploring via the Strassenbahn (streetcar), on foot, by bike and by car. If you go to Germany, Heidelberg is a must-see.

solo

I took a day-trip to Heidelberg while traveling by myself for four or five days in 2004. The old town is cute and there was lots to see and do, even for the solo traveler.

A review of this place

Visited here for 2 nights, (for one afternoon and the next day). As we stayed in a hotel in a suburb, the Heidelburg card worked out well as we used the very efficient bus service into/back from the Altstadt three times. It also included the funicular railroad up to the Schloss and a guided tour of the Scholss.

The Altstadt (old town) is very picturesque with good views from the far side of the Neckar River, and from the Schloss balconies.

The tour of the Schloss is historically interesting as you will encounter the legacy of the Wittelsbach family who rose through the ages to become the Dukes, Electors and Kings of Bavaria. You will likely further encounter the family’s history in Munich (e.g. Residenz) and many of the castles and palaces in Bavaria (including Neuschwanschstein)

There is any number of good, reasonably priced eateries in the pedestrianized area.
