Norfolk

Now I live in Norfolk (I used to live in Chicago). The neighborhood between downtown and the nice neighborhoods is completely ghetto. Though once you get north of the Lynnhaven river you’re fine (yes there’s ALOT of water, pretty views ect.) A tip: don’t hang out at downtown Norfolk at night, it’s creepy you’ll probably get shot.
If you want to go to the beach I would recommend Rehoboth or Bethany Beach (about 3 hours north). Virginia Beach is like one giant tattoo parlor. Not a very good family place. Though it is a good place to come to if you’re interested in the Navy or Naval Science.

I have been to Norfolk, HR, VaBeach area many times. Not a Family Place at all. There are a few nice spots like downtown Norfolk. Mainly its one GIANT GHETTO! Virginia Beach is the worst. They had to enact laws and strict dress codes for the gang members that were getting in fights on the beach so often. I hated going up there. Solution: Drive about an hour south to the Outer Banks of North Carolina!!!!! (OBX)! Incredible Beaches, nice people, very safe, and most of all worth seeing! I wouldn’t recommend going to VaBeach unless you are a 1) felon, 2)looking to get in a brawl, or 3) want to be caught in a drive-by! Its a piece of crap town! Other solution: Go a little farther north to Williamsburg!

was in January 2008 – I was there for two days, one night. Stayed at the home of one of my niece’s and had an interview for an internship. Would like to go back for a vacation some day. The land seemed flat and there was a hint in the air of the salt breezes….

I loved the beaches and it’s got a great aquarium!

Probably the first thing I noticed about the Norfolk area, was that it is full of trees. At times, there could be so many trees, you could call it a forest.

And, people are not afraid to run red lights.

GO DOWNTOWN!!! The architecture is fabulous, and there are all these awesome little shops and restaurants tucked in random places on Granby Street. Hit up Ghent for the pretty houses and art festivals. There’s a pretty good underground urban/culture scene here, that usually only locals are in on. Rappers are always throwing parties at the clubs downtown.

Quite boring..

In 2000, I put my hand through a plate glass table and severed the nerves and tendons in my right hand. But, hey, don’t hold that against the place! I liked it, I lived here 1998-2002; lived in Ghent, the coolest neighborhood in Hampton Roads.

Great restaurants, great waterfront (see the USS Wisconsin!), and a great name (pronounce it as Norfuck; yes that’s how the locals say it, its not a rude word – try it. See? Feels right. Not Nor-Folk. Say it like that and they’ll know you’re a rube!).
