Cordoba

We stayed in Cordoba for five days in May 2003, but spent most of the commuting by train to Seville for the UEFA cup. On our last day, we took a walking tour and I did my panata to visit nine Catholic churches in Cordoba. We ended our tour at the Patio de Los Naranjos, Mezquita de Cordoba and a tapas around the corner.

Cordoba...My Other Office

My company has a manufacturing facility in Cordoba; the main Home office and plant are outside Portland Oregon. I love Cordoba, it has to be one of my favorite European cities; right up there with Paris, Milano, and Madrid.

A couple of my favorite places to eat can be found here @ WikiTravel where I’ve updated some great places to eat.

Also checkout the above site for must see attractions at different times during the year. Or, drop me a note and ask a question, I can find out the answer if I don’t know.

There also are a few photos from my phone on my Flickr account if you would like to see.

The Plane to Spain

I’m not sure why I want to go here, except that the photos of this place on 43 Places make it seem like a cool place to visit. I liked Spain on my first trip and I believe it is worth taking a second look at it. I notice that it is in Andalusia, which has a lot of Moorish influence in the architecture and that is cool to see, also.

Our first stop in Spain: Cordoba. Hot and a bit dusty, tourists abounded. We didn’t mind. The scent of orange (or was it mock orange?) was in the air, and La Mezquita is a magnificent place no matter what. Our first night found us supping on olives and sipping Montilla wine in a narrow alleyway.

For one day only

We stayed two nights in Cordoba on our Andalucian week of fun last year and in hindsight, we would have kept this to one night.

Cordoba is a largish place, but the area that contains all the historical value is v.small.

We stayed at the Hotel Mezquita, which was clean, basic and cheap (tip – book in advance, it gets busy), but we did make the error of asking for a view of the Mezquita walls, which turned out to be v.noisy at night!

The Mezquita is a strange place – half mosque/half cathedral – the arches are dimly lit and it’s quite unnerving in there. The layout is wierd too – rather like the shifting lines you see in vineyards – sometimes lining up on the vertical and then on the diagonal as you move through. For some reason it reminded me of a Hammer Horror. Fantastically atmospheric place.

The backstreets are also worth a wander with some tasty little tapas bars along the way.

The most amazing sacred place

I find that the great mosquee that’s here is one of those places you really have to open your heart and feel what surrounds you while you’re in it.
It’s not just a building, and even though it was eventually “taken over” by the catholics it does not have the standard cristian structure for a church.
In fact it is wide, and dark, but not scary.
It does not show the church institution as strong and powerful, but rather the building wants to be a place where a quite intimate relationship can be carried on between the visitor and God (or whatever other kind of way you call it).
Amazing.
Wish I’d see that again.
I did not have a digital camera back then, but this memory is marked deep in my brain.
