A review of this place

Oh my jesus this place was hot. We were there at the end of the dry season. I’d love to see Kakadu in the wet season, but after suffering so badly in the dry season I fear I wouldn’t be able to stand the weather!

That said, Darwin’s a nice enough little place. Youngish population (lots of tourists and an army presence) seems to have led to its few main downtown streets being correspondingly full of bars and nice little cafes with outdoor patios. It’s on the ocean, but you won’t be able to swim in the surf at certain times of year because of saltwater crocodiles. Still, bay views are nice (especially at the tail end of a 14-day interior trek, which is my experience!).

If visiting, choose somewhere with access to a pool and you’ll be good. :)

Why I want to go to this place

My daughter went to Darwin earlier this year and it looks great. I would like to tow our van up there sometime next year with my husband and have a look around. It looks as though it would suit me much more than Cairns.

How this place changed my life

The first and only time I was in Darwin I lived there for two months. It was a missions trip and I experienced so much. Terrific church families, made so many new friends, worked with many aboriginal children and got to learn about life and culture. I will never forget it… I left a piece of my heart in Darwin, NT.

Numberplates are GR8

I love Darwin and the NT for its numberplates – because the entire population of the territory is around 200 thousand people compared to 4 million plus in other places and the territory like all states has its own numberplates it makes it really easy and cheap to get your own personalised numberplates. Taxi’s here in Darwin have numberplates like Taxi 1, Taxi 8 etc, I saw a tour bus called the tour tub which had the numberplate 2r tub and my favourite so far was a school bus with the numberplate Brat Pak, I’m hoping I can get a new camera soon so that I can take pictures of some of these numberplates.

The last time I went to this place

The last time i was at this place was way back in 94’, stayed for over a year. I quite enjoyed the place, the hot weather and humidity was hard getting used to at first, but once settled it’s lovely. I wouldn’t mind going back there, very fond memories of my school days.

A tip I have about this place

Nice. We were there in the dry season, so it was very hot and VERY sunny. I strongly suggest wearing long pants/a skirt to the kness, at least short sleeves if not long, and spf 50 sunscreen. I didn’t get burnt, but saw a lot of people who were. And a lot of people with terribly sun damaged skin – like leather. Honestly, I experimented, and light long pants/skirt (not jeans!) and sleeves is way cooler than shorts and a tank top. I still got a little tan from the beaches, but no burn from everyday walking.

Just the kind of place I was looking for

First day in Darwin despite hardly having had any sleep I had lots of energy because of the heat. I went around the city and foud almost all of the things I needed and in a fairly short time. It is a place which is big enough to have the things you would need or want, but small enough that you can find them all fairly quickly. I spent the late afternoon on the beach until sunset and saw one of those picture postcard moments and the sun went down and turned the sky orange and then red. I sat there thinking I live here, how great is this.
