Why I want to go to this place

I’m half-Chinese, and my family on my dad’s side are from Taipei. Apparently my parents took me there when I was around two-years-old, but being that young I don’t remember a single thing about the place. I plan to go back there someday, whether with my dad or with my friends after we graduate from college.

Until then I need to work on my Mandarin so I’ll actually be able to hold a conversation with the numerous cousins I have over there still.

Living in Taiwan

I lived in Taipei, Taiwan for three years studying Mandarin Chinese and Chinese art. While there I worked in commercials and periodically in various Taiwanese films and MTV videos as an extra. Amazing experience that I wouldn’t trade for the world.

Taiwan is definitely its own unique place.

The last time I went to this place

was about 7 years ago. Didn’t really take advantage and make the most out of it. Sprawling urban metropolis. Heard from others it can be a real exciting place with an adventurous attitude. For Westerners, the architechture and nature outside the city would be enough to warrant a visit. Just a warning though, very few people speak passable English here.

Too long ago..

I was here when I was too little. I don’t remember what’s going on, except that I went to presidential palace and the guard couldn’t be disturbed at all.

Born and lived there until I was 6 yo

Moved to the US and stopped in Hawaii on the way to SF. My first memory of America was the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki.
Taipei and Taiwan are vastly different from the little town I grew up in. Haven’t been back in 1984 and haven’t felt the urge to go back. Like the people in HK, very materialistic and all about what they own and what they are wearing. Very young soul crowd and people I don’t rezzzzzzonate with.

A review of this place

Personally, the place wasn’t for me … but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t see it. It’s so drastically different there from North America that it really comes as a shock, just being in and around the city. The people, the weather, the atmosphere … it’s all different. Check it out if you get the chance.

A tip I have about this place

Taipei really looks just like any other major city. If it weren’t the Chinese signs tipping you off, you would have no idea. There are signs for Starbucks, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, etc. and most signs are in Chinese and English.

It’s a good place. Don’t worry about getting lost, they are used to visitors in Taipei, and everything is also in English, including the Metro. I had an interesting time there because I ended up reading all the signs twice everywhere.
