Zagreb

I took a VERY slow train to Zagreb (20 hours) from Rome. Spent a scary night looking at train station signs at each stop – scary because I couldn’t read the script and didn’t know if the sign was saying “Zagreb” or some other station! When we finally got to Zagreb, we found (even in 1982) that the sign was written in their script and in the script we use here in the U.S. So, I knew, finally, where to get off the train.
Met nice people there…and had slivovitz (whew, strong) sitting with them in a small backyard courtyard on a hot summer night! Sigh….

I live in Zagreb

In the downtown you really get the feel of old Europe. There are lots of free cultural events going on during the summer, too. The cafe culture was fabulous.

I live there

Lived there for 5 years and the day I left was one of the happiest in my life.

There’s nothing particularly interesting about Zagreb (save the city’s lovely garden sanctuary, which is nice for a stroll), so only stop there if heading on to more compelling Croatian destinations, like Dubrovnik.
