Newfoundland and Labrador aka: Newfoundland

I am from Newfoundland. While I may not live there now, it will always be in my heart. I just love the smell of the salt water and the feel of the breeze of the ocean. There is lots to see and do. The people are really friendly. And of course there is Geroge street. It’s just a little street filled to the brim with bars. There is a bar there for everyone, it’s one of my fav places in down town St. John’s

Ok, well NL is the best place in the world. It is not over populated, and there are still so many small fishing communities that are just beautiful. Everywhere is close to a lake or the ocean, and you begin to take it for granted after awhile if you live there to tell you the truth. In Corner Brook, down by the docks, there is the most stunning view of the bay, and there are mountains, its just really great.
Also if your there during winter, check out Mrable mountain for the best skiing you find in eastern canada.
Also the bigger cities like St. John’s are just big enough. If you’re visiting and want to do some shopping, go downtown (but park a bit away from the actual area, around the brewery or murphys square and walk down, because it’s a bit of a nightmare to drive in that area) or the avalon mall, they should satisfy your shopping cravings. Also in both places mentioned, there are places to get souvenirs. In the avalon mall there is the newfie shopp accross from Lawtons drugs close to the movie theatre and down town there is living planet which is amazing.

When I was in the Stetson University Children’s Choir, we were asked to sing at Newfoundland’s 500th Anniversary.

This was the first time I’d ever traveled outside of the country and it was definitely something I’ll always remember.

It’s also where I met the Queen. Who would have thought?

I’d love to see Newfoundland because of its rugged beauty but I’d also really like to visit two islands off the coast, St Pierre and Miquelon. They are the last 2 French outposts in North America and I had no idea they were there until my sister sent me the travel section of the LA Times. There’s something about that part of Canada that seems so wild and yet so attractive. I’ve been to Quebec, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick but didn’t have the time to go any further. Someday I’d like to explore this area.

Elliot Leyton, a famous sociologist who specializes in the study of human aggression, notes that Newfoundland enjoys one of the lowest homicide rates in the western world. According to Leyton, the rate is approximately 1/100,000. This is the same rate as modern England and half that of the Canadian average of roughly 2/100,000. Leyton suggests the lower rate is rooted in the social and cultural characteristics of the island, primarily the historical need to resolve conflict without recourse to centralized formal social control mechanisms.

Labrador has played strategic roles in both the Second World War and the Cold War. In the early 1940s a German U-boat crew installed an automated weather station on the northern tip of Labrador near Cape Chidley, nicknamed Weather Station Kurt. The station only broadcast weather observations to the German navy for a few days but was not discovered until the 1980s when a historian, working with the Canadian Coast Guard, identified its location.

I’m from Newfoundland but haven’t lived there in over 2 years. I miss it so much. It is a beautiful place, with beautiful people. If you ever have a chance, go visit. It will change your life as well.
