I grew up in KL in the 70’s. It was amazing, multi-cultural and idyllic. I rode horses every day, swam in the sea and had a great life. I spoke Chinese and Malay but have forgotten it all now, which is a shame.
I went back a few years ago for the F1 Grand Prix and a look around. It’s changed out of all recognition and suffers from the same problems as most big cities in the west. I was disappointed by that. It still felt like home though.

I was traveling with a group of people on a trip (on our way to Australia) and stayed over in Kuala Lumpur. Kept sticking out thumbs out (we had no clue how to even hail a cab there or in the US for that matter!) and couldn’t figure out why no cabs would stop. Finally a hotel worker told us that it is like we are flipping them the bird… not sure if that is true or not, but it would make sense why they wouldn’t stop for us! Otherwise, it was a terrific, busy, crazy, fun city to visit, with amazing arcitecture. We stayed at the Dynasty Hotel and had a wonderful view of the twin towers there. Would recommend it to anyone.

Been there sometime in 2005 for over a month to do some projects all at one. I didn’t get the chance to enjoy my visit much, coz i had to work my a$s off to get the jobs done on time. I was relieved that finally I can get out of there. Grin.

Last time I was in KL was last December, and I love the city a lot, even though there’s often traffic jams and more. Lots of modernizing and culture at the same time, awesome place.

For the most part, KL is a fantastic, colourful city, with great food, great shopping places, and mostly friendly people. I’ve always enjoyed my visit to KL, be it for holiday or business (I stayed there for about 6 months in 2003).
That said, if you don’t drive, it’s best to have somebody you know (maybe a friend) bringing you around. My experience with the taxis here, it’s like whenever you get into a cab your chance is 40-40-20: 40% chance of getting shown ridiculous price at the end of the trip (it’s like all of them have a “QUINTUPLE THE METER RATE” hidden button somewhere), 40% chance of getting asked for ridiculous money before the trip starts, 20% of actually finding a normal, or rather I should say exceptional, taxi driver. I usually tip generously those exceptional taxi drivers who charge me normal rate, because they are so freakin rare.
Do NOT go alone if you’re female. Travel in packs. If you feel that you’re pretty and/or well-endowed, curvaceous, voluptuous, whatever, please don’t succumb to that temptation of “flaunting what you’ve got”. Cover yourself well. I’ve heard and read too many gangrape stories in KL newspapers, the last one was a model who was raped and then murdered. Please, be safe. Use common sense. Travel in packs, get some guyfriends in the group, do not go to dark areas, be watchful of your surroundings, and carry a pepper spray just in case.
Um, it’s going to be strange saying this after all that above, but I’ll definitely go back. Nice, nice city overall.

Eventhough I have been to Kuala Lumpur lots of times, it never seems to disappoint me. The last time I was here was August 2006. This time I made a point to visit the new tourist attraction, the Aquaria near the twin towers. Shopping here is excellent, the branded stuff are a bit too expensive compared to other counties though. Eating is definitely “thumbs-up” here, you can practically find anything here!!! I am definitely planning to go here again.
