Melaka aka: Malacca

OK place, but boring and out of the way. I’d skip it and find something more interesting to do.

This is a place where I can have peace and quiet. It’s convenient to getaway to Melaka as it’s only a 4-hour drive from where I live. I always enjoy shopping here coz it’s cheap and there are no crowds! Great food too - gotta visit the Portuguese settlement where they have the yummiest debel’s curry and brinjol. Ole Sayang Peranakan Restaurant is also a fave, and the Newton food village is cheap and good too!

And I thought Kelantan gives a good array of food. Malacca gives the best food fare!

Kim, Jase, Eric and I just binged on food nearly 6 times a day! That was how good it was. We had ice kachang (shaved ice with really good malaccan sugar), chicken rice balls and all kinds of other local delicacies.

Shopping on Jonker street was also fantabulous!!

I went here about 5 years back and I loved the place. The people were so friendly and there is lots of old temples and the like. Great place.

if it gets too hot hang out in the shopping centre while you cool down, then head back out!

My mum lived in Melaka in the 1960s, and stayed with a Chinese family during the racial riots. They had a curfew at night, and used to pass food to their neighbours via a pulley attached to the windows. She was there for 2 years teaching maths and physics (in english) through Australian Volunteers Abroad, and received a local wage. She had a life-changing experience, despite a pragmatic lack of romantic notions of saving the world.

In 1989, when I was 9 years old we went back to Malaysia and of course stopped in Melaka. We walked down the street she used to live on for nostalgia’s sake, and ran into one of her old neighbours who instantly recognised her, calling her by her maiden name, because she wasn’t married at the time. We had lunch with some of the families there, who now had children and grandchildren.

I wish I could remember more about the Nonya houses and food, I planned a trip back there (on the way to India) a few years ago but my travelling companion got sick and we cancelled the trip. I would love to go back though. I have heard it has changed alot, but probably not as much as to when my mum lived there in dangerous times.

Stayed in an old shop house in the chinatown area. Went to night bazaar at the chinatown area. Eat peranakan cuisine, to die for! The museum at the central square is a great show case, with cheap ticket too.
