Two of the best military assignments...

we’ve had in 21 years!! in 1991 we lived in Bad Toelz, then got transferred to Stuttgart when that base closed in the draw down. Then in 2002 we moved to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. We loved every minute we were there and hope to be assigned there again!! The people are wonderful and there are so many wonderful sites to see!

A tip I have about this place

I am a bit bias since I do live here, however Bavaria is one of the most serene places I have been. If this was America all of the mountains would be built up with resorts and the natural beauty would be gone. My husband is Bavarian and they have immense amounts of pride for their heritage.

The only thing I would warn you about is the meat heavy cuisine. And yes most of those rumors about beer are true as well (except for the one about Bavarians drinking beer warm) – a traditional Bavarian breakfast is weißwurst and weißbier.

Why I recommend this place to visitors

The most beautiful little towns, timber homes with thatch roofs, and the Konigsee, which was probably one of my favorite places in Germany.

Why I want to go to this place

I was born in Bad Toelz and I think it would be really neat to visit the place.

22 days of heaven...

I went to Germany on a class trip in 1999, right after I graduated. It was the happiest and most gratifying time of my life. An absolute utopian experience. I stayed for twenty two days total, I lived with a family that lived in a large five bedroom house with a huge yard with a pond and a sauna in it. I made many friends when I lived there, saw many breath-taking sights and ate the best food ever prepared for me. I did the normal tourist things, Neuschwannstein castle, saw the tallest mountain in Germany (wendelstein)...etc. Those sights were amazing and forever etched into my head but what I really was searching for was the emotional aspect of the trip, the people I would touch…and get to know and be able to remember. I wanted to see some souls…and oh did I. I will never forget the culture, how rich it was…they keep very old things alive..thing we have forgotten and let fall to the way-side. Cobblestone streets are still prevelant in some areas of Bavaria. The town my house was in is a very small wealthy suburb called Raubling, when we wanted to do things we usually took the train into the closest city called Rosenheim. I will never forget my host family, Mr. and Mrs. Blank and their children Katharina, Leo and Simon. It’s been years since I have had contact with this family and I am still trying to find them, hopefully I will one day. Hopefully, I will go back.

It's great to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there...

I used to live in Northern Bavaria, near the town of Amberg (it’s about 40 km north of Regensburg and about 50 km to the east of Nuremburg) and also went to school there. The scenery is breathtaking, and I can recommend going there on vacation because there is a lot you can see and experience, but I wouldn’t want to live there. In my opinion the Bavarians are a strange sort folk who are very proud of their state and the happiest when their with their own (well, that’s the experience that I had).
