I’ve been here for a little while and I’ve had the opportunity to see a lot of the city. There are still parts I haven’t seen yet. I would say come see this place, but that depends on what your reasons are for coming. I read one post that mentioned that there were guards at the gate to their hotel. Oh my!
There are guards everywhere! It makes things much safer. Poverty is a major problem in this entire country, and so theft attempts occur. Thus the reason for the guards. However, the only people that I know of who have been robbed since I’ve been here have all been Kenyans and they were robbed on a matatu (public transit) which I’m sure if you’re just visiting you will never ride. (I’ve only seen two other wazungu (white people) on matatus in my time here.)
If there is anything I hate about this city, it is ignorant white people. I would begin to rant, but I know it won’t accomplish anything so I’ll stay quiet. All I can say is educate yourself about Kenyan culture before you come, find a Kenyan friend you can trust to advise you on what is proper and what is not. You are probably offending the people around you and you dont’ even know it…or don’t care. If you don’t care about such things…stay home. You’re not wanted here. All you do is add to the horrible view Kenyans have of white people.
If I love anything about this city, it is the cheapness of things. Prices cannot be very high due to the poverty here, so it is pretty easy to find cheap prices. However, again, it is good to have a Kenyan friend along with you because Kenyans will take advantage of you if you don’t watch yourself.
Come to Kenya! The people you meet will be worth the trip. They are innocent to all of the things that have corrupted white culture. And it’s my favourite thing about this country.
