Baghdad

Before the invasion of kuwait and iraq. Just after the iran/iraq war. People were glad to be done with war and happy to get on with their lives.

..I got shot at. A lot.

How does one get to iraq anyway? I’ve only been searching for like 15 minutes, but I figured someone here might know. I really don’t have any plans to go any time soon-perhaps by the time I’m in the position to it’ll be easier, but I was just curious. Can a regular tourist visit Iraq yet, or do you have to get special permission?

I guess that’s all I’ve got to say for now. Mange takk to anyone who has an answer to this.

I spent a year here, running convoys to various other bases, cities and villages in Iraq and Kuwait. It gets insanely hot in late summer, incredibly wet in the winter, and the rest of the time its just dry, hot and dusty.

Baghdad itself was an amazing city, full of history, romance, and violence few can imagine. The people are friendly, although there are a few who are, understandably, hostile to Americans.

I fully intend on visiting this place again in 5-10 years!

I only stayed for a day, but I’m heading back again next week. Every day is an adventure!

The photo is Sadaam’s Victory over America palace. It’s not a great shot because I was in a moving car when I took it. However, something tells me that he started construction on this a little ahead of schedule!

Serving here has been an amazing experience, but I wouldn’t recommend that most folks come over here now. Maybe after all of the “excitement” dies down, though.
