Uzbekistan aka: Ozbekiston

A wonderful place where the people are friendly and the history so different from Canada. I was there over ten years ago, but fear that travel (and life for the Uzbeks) may be difficult given the current political challenges in the neighbourhood. We stayed in B&Bs and that made all the difference. What a change from the Soviet era—staying with families rather than in Intourist hotels.

I’ve visited Uzbekistan twice, the first time on a holiday to Central Asian republics of the Soviet Union and the second time on a holiday to China, which included a visit to Uzbekistan on the way back.

Uzbekistan is a sweet place to go and be. I met alot of people and made a ton of friends.

This was a joke between some friends, and then we found out it actually existed, so it would be mad place to visit. It sounds so beautiful as well.

I bought a copy of this month’s Wanderlust today and they have a good article on overland trips. They mention Wild Frontiers that has quite a few trips to central Asia, including Uzbekistan. It’s definitely worth investigating.

I was there for a few days during the 5 months I worked in Tajikistan in 1996. Surely lots have changed. Only hit Samarkand and Tashkent in a matter of 3-4 days. Samarkand was AMAZING, the Registan as were those other mosque type places. The market in S was great too, as they are everywhere in Central Asia. Would love to return and visit Khiva and Bukhara.

I’ve been wanting to go to Uzbekistan, since I heard that it’s really beautiful there. I know some people who went there and loved it.

Uzbekistan is an amazing land! The people, the cities, the history, Samarkand, Bukhara… Absolutely beautiful!

Samarkand and Bukhara are interesting spots (but limited, you can see them in a day), and the Ferghana valley is picturesque, but otherwise there isn’t much to recommend.
