tragedy in the world

I was very young when we lived in sudan. My father was sent there for work. Though I don’t remember much Sudan had an enormous impact on me. The kind of things you see in Sudan are the type of things that mould and shape someone’s character. At a very young age I learnt about starvation and doing anything you had to do to get. None of this having anything to do with age. While living there I witnessed a young child, not more then 6 or 7, in a garbage dump fighting with the goats over what rotten scraps may be in the heap. This is a tragedy that no living thing should ever experience.
That one instant changed me forever and definitly shaped me as a helper. Someone who will do anything I can to help anyone I am able to help. All this to say, don’t take what you have for granted and do what you can to help those in need. Don’t just throw stuff away, there may be someone to whom your junk is treasor. Find the organizations and charities that are willing to deliver you junk to those who need it. Do what you can, you never know what tomorrow will bring. You may be the one thinking someone’s trash is your gold.

too hot, a little dusty, very different attitude of different tribes… visit the tiny piramids and stay over night there, or just go to juba, for a little rest, or go for watching the most “ancient” suffies in the world on fridays….

Why I want to go to this place

I’d like to work with Doctors Without Borders, but I hear you have to have a minimum of a nursing degree to get in. As that’s stricken (for at least the next few years), I’d like to volunteer in some way, particularly distributing food or helping kids. The crisis in Sudan is quite possibly the worst in the known world at the moment… I’m willing to help in any way possible.

How this place changed my life

My parents worked in Southern Sudan (Lui to be exact) for about a year and half at a hospital as humanitarian aid workers. I was able to visit them for 2 weeks last summer. It was incredible. The amount of need and despair is something I will never forget. There are no roads, there is no electricity, there is no running water. There is no such thing as public services. And I was in a pretty sizable town. But the people are beautiful in body and spirit. I have never met a people group that has more inner strength than the Dinkas. They are truly warriors. I conducted research for my senior thesis while I was there by interviewing various local people. The stories I was told are ingrained in my memory. I talked to SPLA soldiers, to the chief of Lui, to pastors, to hospital workers, to SPLA commanders, etc. I have never been to a place that is worse off economically. But the land is beautiful even though it has been raped and robbed of its resources. I tried to spend as much time as possible with the children that are always hanging around, because children are the future and if Sudan is ever going to function as a whole again they are the ones who will make it possible.

Why I want to go to this place

i dont know if i am capable…i need to be “emotionaly” strong, to see all that poverty with my eyes.. but i know they need my hands, my head, my words perhaps…
