I was born in Surinam and lived there for 4 years. it’s the most beautiful place you’ll ever see. the jungels are as pure as they were thousands of years ago. the villages are what makes this country unique. everybody is willing to lend a helping hand. if you don’t speak dutch, dont worry: englisch and just about every other language can be found there.

How this place changed my life

It is old timish country with untouched nature and people live in harmony with each other. Everybody is usually very loving and kind, always willing to help.

In the past everyone knew english, but now it seems that the younger generation don’t bother to learn english and they have created their own kind of “modern” culture. I guess that makes Suriname even more intriguing! (mixing the old and the new)

Suriname, the undevelop land

I have been to Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname. I was there for almost 6 months, and the environment resemble the 60’s era, where wooden house and old buildings is nice to look at. Forest are green as they can be, and surprisingly this little country was a multi-ecthnic group although the official language was Dutch. Somehow I do can pick up a few words around as some of my friends are chinese, Indian and Javanese. I learn the dutch language by the teaching from my friends where I ask them Hakka and malay, and they translate to me in dutch.

How this place changed my life

You will never find a more beautiful country then Suriname… Learn the taal – Sranan Tongo, and speak it, because everyone will be very excited if a foreigner speaks their language.

The jungles are beautiful, the villages are amazing and the people are great!

I love it. I am staying!

Interesting culture and food

If you go to Suriname, there is a high liklihood of someone will know your language. The official language is Dutch. But there are so many different culture including Chinese, Javanese, East Indians, Blacks and Caucasians, and most people will speak Dutch and one of these native language (Hindi, Javanese, Chinese). Some even know Spanish and French as well! An a lot of them know English. This interesting mix of culture does mean Suriname has a lot of different food to choose from

Formal residence

I lived here until I was 16. It is not your typical SOHO trip. No celebrated museums, world renounced art galleries etc. But… what a great experience. By all means make a visit to the open air market ( Centrale Markt).
You may also want to visit the largest wooden cathedral in the Western Hemisphere (Sint Peter en Paulus)
Eco-tours to the interior are another highlight. Make sure you consult your physician regarding malaria prevention.
