Bali and East Timor

Bali was ok, East Timor the Indonesians should be ashamed of. Would rather head to Thailand to be perfectly frank.

Overview of Indonesia

Indonesia has a very various cultures (around 300 ethnic groups) and abundant natural resources. It comprises of more than 17,000 islands to make it the largest archipelagic state in the world. Its population as of 2007 is more than 234 million.

The five largest islands are Java (the world’s most populous island), Sumatera, Kalimantan (Borneo), Sulawesi (Celebes) and Papua.

Puncak Jaya in Papua is Indonesia’s highest peak, at 5,030 meters. Lake Toba in North Sumatra is its largest lake, with an area of 1,145 square kilometers. Indonesia has at least 150 active volcanoes, including Krakatau.

The most popular tourist destination in Indonesia nowadays is Bali. Komodo dragon, a large lizard native to Indonesia, and Borobudur, a very huge ninth century Budhist temple, are only few of many other tourist attractions in this country.

I’m originally from Bandung, the fourth biggest city in the country. Its elevation is 768 metres above sea level. Geological data shows that the Bandung Basin is located on an ancient volcano, known as Mount Sunda.

The official language is Indonesian, which is adopted from Malay long time ago. Every ethnic group usually has at least one local language. Very few people speak English and Dutch.

Why I want to go to this place

my husband is from Indonesia. I want to go there with him, and see where he comes from. I want to experience his culture directly.

We are both part Dutch. He teases me because my Dutch part is so diluted—I am 13th generation US. His parents are Dutch-Indonesian, both of them. His mother looks totally Asian, and his dad is so ancient you can’t tell anything about his ancestry.

Before I ever met him, I gave myself a name Gamelan - after an Indonesian musical instrument. Later, I found a recording of this instrument - it was a very esoteric recording, before “world music” had a section in Borders, and before Borders. And later, I hung an Indonesian mask on my wall. I spent a lot of money - for me - on it. It had huge long tresses and crazy eyes, and was meant to keep the house safe from fire. I find all this very odd. The only other really odd recording I ever bought was of Harry Partch US Highball or Barstow.

Why I want to go to this place

I have a friend that has spent a great part of his life here doing mission work. I think that’s highly admirable, and would appreciate the opportunity to do the same. Maybe not necessarily here, but from his description of the islands, it’s absolutely gorgeous.

what i love about here

I have been to Indonesia since this is my mother’s native country. I’ve only been to the big cities but let me tell you, they have VERY cheap food. Everything is really different from the US too, there are always people walking around on the streets selling stuff, and people coming up to your car asking for money. I stood out very much because I am white, and don’t be suprised if someone you meet wants to take a picture with you.
