Latvia aka: Latvija

Traveled through the Baltic States in 1999.

Went there on holiday when I went to the three Baltic countries.

• Riga
• Jurmala coast region
• Cesis (and Gauja National Park)
• Sigulda

They were really nice. Going canoeing down one of the rivers in the Gauja National Park was ace, and not too expensive, either, and wandering the forest surrounding Sigulda was a nice break before getting back to the city.

If only they had a few more hills for all that forest…

It’s one of the most amazing places that I have been. Awesome people that treat Americans very well.

My Great-Grandparents and my Grandfather once upon a time owned large (apparently) tracts of land here. The natzis changed all of that. And so they fled to America and settled in Indiana.

I love you grandpa. I wish I had known you better.

I loved my visit there, right down to the train ride from Moscow. Then my boyfriends cousin drove from Vilnius to pick us up and bring us there—I was so happy for the drive through the country.
