I’ve been here twice… both in the winters of when I was in grade six and seven so I must have been 10, 11, 12-ish. As a child I was kind of rebelious and hated the idea of going to a “hot, tropical oasis” like EVERYONE else does… I kind of regret my attitude, but it was a gorgeous place. Went on a submarine, a helicopter, horseback riding in a pineapple plantation, and much more. Very fun.

Went in January 2006 and stayed near the town of Kapa’a. We drove all over the island and it was gorgeous. The weather was a bit on the rainy side, but all in all, it was fabulous.

I visited this place several times during my trip with Encounters With Canada. My favourite excursion was when we walked from downtown Ottawa past the lit up Parliament buildings and across the bridge at night in the rain. Also visited Gatineau/Hull to see the Museum of Civilization. Awesome.

I attended a program called Encounters With Canada (Rencontres du Canada) where youth from all over the country stay at the Terry Fox Center to expand their horizons and visit their capital city. It united us all and really helped us form a sense of Canadian identity. I made so many friends there and I will never forget it. Ever.
