Golders Green

Worth visiting!

It's mostly kosher

But there’s a 24/7 gourmet baker. And the Sainsbury’s nice too. Club Extreme just off Golders Green tube is a bit on the cheap side, but hey – it’s NW11

Zizkov Monument

Worth visiting!

Great view

The Zizkov Monument on top of the city was built between 1929 and 1932 to commemorate the victory of General Jan Zizka and the Hussites in 1420 over the papal forces and sports Europes largest horse and rider statue. Also the building doubles as FBI’s secret lab in the beginning of the movie Hellboy. You get a great view over the city, but not many people go there. Don’t ask for directions at the tourist office; the monuments importance as a setting for political ritual during the communist era has ensured no one knows about it. Despite its massive physical and symbolic properties, the monument is effectively forgotten about.

Nistru Beach

(in Moldova)

Worth visiting!

Riverbed beach

This is a surprisingly beachy beach when you consider it’s at least 300km from the sea. It’s located at the banks of the river Nistru which is the border between the republic of Moldova and the autonomous region of Transnistria, so besides a nice trip to the beach you can also have a view on the complicated political situation in Moldova.

The beach is really nice and the atmosphere is relaxed. I went there on a sunny day, and the place was packed with people. You can wear usual swimclothes/bikini. At times there will be contests arranged by the local franchise of the Romanian TV station Pro TV. Usually this will be dancing contests and such.

The beach is easily accessed with mini-bus from Chisinau (30 minutes).

Chisinau

Worth visiting!

Old eastern Europe

The Moldovan capital still has a lot of the characteristics of pre-capitalism eastern Europe. I’ve been there twice.

Århus

Worth visiting!

I was born and raised here

.. and also spent the next 29 years ;-)
I know so much about this city I don’t know what to say.

Malmo

(in Sweden)

Worth visiting!

Inexpensive from Copenhagen

40 minutes away from my home city of Copenhagen, Malmö is the favourite place to go for a short trip abroad. The city is small with a cosy centre and good shopping oppertunities. You will definetely get 20% off the price on most products compared with Copenhagen – except for alcohol which traditionally has been expensive in Sweeden.

Not worth visiting!

Tourist trap

I went there in the summer of 2004, and must say that there were far too many tourist for my liking. Also too many pickpockets and strip joints.

Rüdesheim

Worth visiting!

Ibiza for the cane generation

Rüdesheim is located in the picturesque Rhine Valley in Germany. In itself it is a romantic sight, and you can walk both along the Rhine and in the wine fields above the town. Rüdesheim is easily accessed by train or car from Koblenz or Wiesbaden.

But at night everything changes! I’ve never seen so many drunk elderly people in my life :-) The city is a minefield of bars and pubs with old people in them. I found it amusing.
