Rocco's Pastry Shop & Espresso Cafe

Worth visiting!

mini cannoli

This weekend I stopped by here with my parents for some dessert- we had some mini cannoli (filled as you order them behind the counter) and some pine nut cookies. Both were delicious. This seems to be a great little italian bakery, and suprisingly, not that expensive given that it’s on Bleeker St.

Penn Station

Untitled

Off in the LIRR area, there’s an entrance to a KMart. That always struck me as highly amusing.

The commuter train areas are a bit of a labyrinth, but fun to walk through at the height of the evening rush hour. And having finally been in the Acela first class lounge- meh. It’s always overcrowded, because they simply don’t have near enough seating. I’ll take meandering around the rest of the station next time.

Apple Store Fifth Avenue

Untitled

I bought my incase powerbook bag here. The employees are very nice & helpful- I had a chat with one of them about what bag I should choose, and I’m really happy with his suggestion to get the incase bag.

For some reason, I thought it would be HUGE inside, but it’s really not. The staircase is very cool, though, and it’s right outside the entrance to FAO Schwartz.

Cafe Duke

Worth visiting!

Untitled

One stop shop for decent food (shockingly, not so easy to come by in Times Square, which mostly has overpriced food for tourists). What I buy here: Japanese gummy candies, black & white cookies, ice cream. What not to buy here: bagels. They’re really bad here.

It’s huge inside, so there’s a wide variety of food you can get. It’s kind of expensive, but this is Times Square. On the other hand, it has free wifi.

Codecracker

Worth visiting!

Nutcracker statue

A number of nutcracker statues have appeared around Seattle this weekend. There’s one on the sidewalk on the West side of 5th between Olive and Stewart which has some kind of code written around his base and on his hat. He’s called the Codecracker, so I guess the artist is hoping someone will decrypt him.

The website about them is all flash (yuck) so I saved a screen capture of Mr Codecracker on the website (the red dot on the map to the right is where he is).

Salamanca Market

Worth visiting!

Untitled

Salamanca is where I ate most of my meals when I was in Hobart. There’s a coffeehouse in the inner courtyard area which had tables with umbrellas, and I spent a few afternoons sitting out there in the sunshine.

I want to go back here someday

Hobart is a great small city. I spent a wonderful week here once.

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

Worth visiting!

Beautiful

The art is nice here, but what makes the place is the building. The courtyard is amazing, and I love wandering around on the top 3 floors of the museum. The atmosphere inside make this a huge “don’t miss” for Boston.

US Coast Guard Academy

Worth visiting!

sailboats

When I raced in a few sailing regattas at Connecticut College, we used boats from the Academy as well as Connecticut College’s boats. After the race, we would sail the borrowed boats back to the Academy’s boathouse, which was HUGE. The campus is really pretty.

beautiful in the evening

This park runs along Elliott Bay, and is gorgeous in the evening when the sun is setting.
