Takamatsu, Kagawa

Worth living there, but not worth a visit.

I lived here for two years as an English teacher. The people are friendly and helpful. Takamatsu is a small, modern Japanese city, but there is a dearth of tourist sights and activities. Do not expect to get around unless you are patient and have at least a small command of Japanese. The city is otherwise unremarkable from other small, modern Japanese cities. I enjoyed living there, made friends, found some pleasant country sites, and cultivated a few traditional hobbies. The pace is slower on Shikoku Island compared to elsewhere in Japan. I recommend living in Takamatsu to people who are considering it, because you will be immersed in Japanese culture, you will learn Japanese, the pace is easier, and the city has enough amenities that one won’t feel isolated. But I would not recommend a casual visit for tourists, because Takamatsu sights and activities are less remarkable versions of things that are more impressive elsewhere in Japan. Also Takamatsu is quite out of the way of nearly all other Japanese tourist destinations. If you do find yourself in Takamatsu, try the food, especially udon, which is the regional specialty.
