Don’t stay in Sudder Street. It may be cheap, but it’s NASTY! Especially during monsoon season, the drainage system there is non-existent!
Try and plan slightly in advance and book a flat/homestay, much more pleasant and you get a much more balanced view of the city. I hate how this city has such a negative media image, it has so much to offer other than orphans and poverty. Try to see past the somewhat tatty exterior to find one of the true gems of India, the Bengali spirit!
I lived in Calcutta and other places in West Bengal for around 5 months in total, so I’m happy to answer any questions…although I haven’t been back for 2 yrs.
