Toledo

Worth visiting!

TTOWNROBIN

Toledo has had an unfounded, poor reputation for much too long, no thanks to John Denver’s “Saturday Night In Toledo, Ohio”...I would be so happy to hear a new song that would immortalize our city rather than give listeners a vision or opinion of our city that simply is not true.. There is SO much to do here! We have wonderful weather for the most part, each of the four seasons are showcased nicely each year, with all the colors you imagine. Many the damaging storms seem to miss us here within the city limits.
Like our Mayor or not, with Mr. Finkbeiner’s leadership, our hard-working city laborers and staff have transformed our downtown area into a tourist mecca, full of theaters, a brand new baseball stadium, an arena for concerts, circuses, and shows. We have plenty of places you can walk to safely, weekday or weekend, downtown and suburbs. The restaurants are wonderful, including the coffee shops, jazz clubs, rock music clubs, clubs for alternative entertainment, and a dance club or two.
Toledo’s TARTA offers inexpensive, dependable, clean public transportation. Our museums, from the Center of Science and Industry (COSI), our breathtaking, unique Art Museum and adjacent brand new Glass Museum, not to mention the Firefighters and smaller collections of historical finds are showcased in our wonderful libraries and many galleries here. There are free attractions and costly society events, a little this and that for every interest and budget. We offer all the historical feel of the “old towne” Toledo with eateries and architecture to tell the stories of our heritage, apart from and within the summer festivals for Polish, Greek, Irish, Mexican, Hungarian (and more) influences.
The Maumee River that runs alongside the downtown area, allows us to celebrate summer near the docks with the “Rally’s By The River, that showcase local talent and famous name entertainment during the holidays. The fireworks will be spectacular with the new Veterans Memorial Skyway Bridge and the impending new Marina district being built in the background!
With all this and much much more to offer, we are ready to face the future and welcome visitors with pride, just as we always have been. I strongly recommend that you add Toledo to your travel wish list!

St. George Island

Worth visiting!

St. George Island

It’s been a while but if you need info I could dig it up. We stayed at a little hotel there, but before we did, we drove as far as we could till the road ended then walked for an hour all the way to the tip of the island, and found the most beautiful seashells and sand dollars I have ever seen. This trip was before all the recent hurricanes – back around 1982 or 83.

The Ferry To Dog Island

Worth visiting!

We rented a houseboat and ferried over to Dog island from Apalachicola

I heard the boat, “the Laughing Gull” was damaged back during Hurricane Ivan.I hope it’s back up and ready for rental by the time i go back. it was THE BEST ADVENTURE I EVER HAD. A sack of oysters, bathing suit, net to get sand dollars, beer, and a honey to share it with, along with a 76 degree day was a dream come true. The dolphins raced the boat and we got stuck on a dane and had to bask in the sun till the tide came in, but that was just fine with us!

Pensacola

Worth visiting!

I lived in Pensacola for 8 years off and on..

I attended Pine Forest high School there, my senior year – 1978, met the love of my life, and graduated early. He started fooling around once I wasn’t there, but we remained friends. We then moved away and ended up back in Toledo.
He called me and asked me to come back down and us try again in 1979 or 80 (I think – it’s gets fuzzy there..) and we lived together in an aitstream trailer for a couple years, then broke up and I came back to Toledo again. THEN He called me and asked me to marry him on the phone. I still loved the guy all that time and it was my dream come true for a while. We married as I returned to Pensacola in 1981. We were married until 1986 when we divorced under poor conditions but still remained friends. I moved back home again. he called me AGAIN and begged me to come back and try to work it out, but this time I said no. I regret this now, as I still love him. He remarried and has a child now and a very nice wife. i promised my best friend at the time I last left that I would come back as soon as I got on my feet. I never have. She doesn’t think much of me anymore and I’m sure I hurt her. I’d give anything to be able to sell my house and move back, but with the hurricanes, I have to have a substantial savings put away that I couldn’t touch to be sensible about moving back. I miss the beach and all my friends there, terribly, but I know that I would always be “looking” to bump into “him” and restart our lives together. I think me being here is for the best. One of these days I want to go back and visit again. I went in 1999 when I spread my mothers ashes over the Gulf of Mexico, and haven’t been able to swing the money to go back since. The sugary white sands and the sound and smell of the Gulf have a way of changing your outlook on everything.
