I was stranded in Schaumburg once and found that while stranded, nothing beats a good mall and a lot of chain restaurants. Plus, there’s an IKEA and a not-too-distant Trader Joe’s.

Madison is awesome – definitely the best place I’ve ever lived! (Take that, San Francisco!)

ETA: I no longer live in Madison, and it’s still the best place I’ve ever lived, of a pool that includes the Bay Area, the Twin Cities, and the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. You can’t beat the combination of small-city convenience and big-city bustle. Plus, the lakes are fantastic. I wish I could move back!

St. Louis Park was a great place to grow up in – solidly middle class, not pretentious, and close to the city. It’s not as exciting as Minneapolis for the young and hip, but it’s definitely better than many other suburbs on that front.
