Oodnadatta, South Australia

Oodnadatta - Blossom of the Mulga

Oodnadatta is a small town located over 1000km from Adelaide, in the middle of the South Australian Outback. The main feature is the Pink Roadhouse, which is actually quite run down and faded but looks ok from across the road. They sell all the supplies you could need, including tyres, gas, petrol, food, water etc. They also do mechanical repairs which you may need if you have not been prepared for the trip. The road is not always the best condition, being all gravel. You can camp out the back of the roadhouse, and there are good showers and toilets. Be warned – everything is VERY expensive, as all the supplies have to be trucked into the town and it is a very long way from anywhere. Despite being such a harsh environment, it is an area of great natural beauty, but plan your trip very well if travelling into the outback – don’t hire a little car in Adelaide and think you can drive there in a day! But definitely worth a visit.

William Creek, South Australia

William Creek - Australia's smallest town

This place is located on the Oodnadatta Track, half way between Maree and Oodnadatta, in the South Australian Outback. It is a fantastic place to visit because it is so remote. There is a pub and a shop – that’s all. They sell petrol, tyres and supplies, food and you can camp there. If you are thinking of going, plan your trip carefully, this is harsh, rugged and dangerous country. In summer the temperature is 40+, there is no water and little shade in the desert. We went in October and it was beautiful. Hello to John at the pub, maybe he remembers us, we arrived on the day of the Bathurst car races and watched it in the bar with him and a Canadian guy. You can also get scenic flights over Lake Eyre from here. The Oodnadatta Track is a fantastic way to see the tru Aussie outback but just be prepared.

Excellent wineries, friendly people, great places to stay, overall an excellent place to visit. Hire a car and easily drive around the wineries or take a tour. Beautiful country, close to Adelaide and well worth a visit.
