Turn of the year

It had been raining all day in Wailuku. So Mom and Dad and I went to eat early dinner in Maalaea.

It was still grey, but the drops had stopped when we sat down. As the food came to the table, we spotted two whales playing in water, one adult, one small. They frolicked for about five minutes as the blanket of clouds above turned deep pink. As the light neared horizontal, a big fat rainbow planted one leg sturdily on the hillside across the bay.

Happy Maui new year!

beach walk

7:00 – 9:00 am
The sun just topped the sandy cliffs. A dad was fishing, two boys maybe four and five years old ran shrieking through the surf. I sat down on a rock to eat the still warm cinnamon roll picked up at Surf Donut. Until I was inexorably surrounded by seven silent staring seagulls.

Walked the sandy trail beside the rr tracks. Many baseball-capped runners of various ages. The surf sounded stereophonically from the ocean on my left and bouncing off the cliffs to my right.

By a little after 8 hard core beach volleyball was happening and the waves a little south of the pier were swarming with surfers and boogie boarders.

to visit this place today. After sundown, I picked up the LA Times and read that there was an open house there this afternoon. Here’s the article, with lovely bottle wall pic

What I want to do at this place

I just spent time with an old friend who lives and works in Petersburg. She brought up the idea of applying for a Fulbright to spend some extended time studying and teaching there. Intriguing and promising…

small but rich

with living connections to the community. the docent must’ve been a history teacher – great storyteller with laser sharp command of local anecdote, historical detail, cultural and political complexity. occasional demonstrations by master crafters – worth seeking out.

Friends of the LA River

give a swell walking tour of the soft bottom stretch of the river, with a history of how the river was turned into a flood channel.
