I made a deal with myself one day in March of 2004, around my 27th birthday, that if I didn’t get the job I was interviewing for I would buy a ticket to Mexico. On May 1st I was in Mexico City with my WOOFer card (organic farm workers) ready to change my life, find myself, have an adventure.
I went alone with just a small backpack, having rid myself of most possessions before my trip. I had also left behind some bad habits, mainly drinking and smoking. My goal was to leave everything behind that I did not want to carry with me anymore, keeping only the basic necessities and lots of room for positive growth.
I spent my first week sightseeing around Mexico City and Puebla. I highly recommend the Museo de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, the murals are spellbinding. Also, it is good to know that on Sundays all the museums are FREE, so for those traveling on a budget this is the day to make the rounds. I also went out to Teotihuacan, the pyramids, which was a great way to spend a sunny afternoon. I was warned about the city as being dangerous, and maybe I was just lucky but I didn’t run into any problems.
The rest of my time in Mexico was spent in Chiapas, close to the Guatemala border. This is where I worked on an organic farm 6 days a week, 10-12 hours a day. It changed my life—
