I hiked out with my father to see Morning Glory Pond. It was the one thing I wanted to see in Yellowstone more than anything else. To this day, I can bring it full force into life in my memory. I have never seen so many shades of blue. Indigo in the middle to translucent at the edges with swirls of pearl all around, rising out into vapor and just floating away. I cried when I had to leave.

This was part of a family trip out West after my brother graduated from high school. Imagine: myself, my brother, mother, father, both grandmothers and their shared boyfriend. In a van. For two weeks.

Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

Like needles made from stone spires.

Your first sight of Bryce is an overview from the top of the canyon. It looks like the valley floor is reaching for you or maybe the sky. Columns and columns of rock set out like an impractical pincushion. I hit this just after I visited Zion. The snow storms that rendered Zion into a lattice work of red and white had made this completely inaccesible to visitors. So I stood on the edges and wondered about the bottom.
