Curio Bay, Southland

A true treasure

Let’s see… a 180 million year old petrified forest on the shoreline, miniature dolphins, the occasional whale, rare penguins that walk right past you, and a pretty decent surf break. All this in an environment where you might not see a dozen other people all day long. Curio Bay is flat-out awesome.

We visited in mid-winter, and other than a trio of diehard surfers, we pretty much had the place to ourselves. At sunset, we sat on the rocky shore and watched yellow-eyed penguins emerge from the surf and waddle within arm’s length of us on their way to their nests in the surrounding bush. We didn’t see the rare Hector’s Dolphins that frequent the area – in winter they stay further off shore.

There aren’t a lot of lodging or dining options, especially in winter, but you won’t mind.

Seriously, one of the most amazing experiences ever.

Pulau Macan, Java Sea

Awesome weekend getaway from Jakarta

Pulau Macan (Tiger Island) is an eco-resort located on two tiny islands about 45 nautical miles away from Jakarta.

The resort is made up of several huts, communal bathing, lounging, and dining facilities, and a whole lot of sunshine, sparkling blue water, and mellow ambiance. People come here to chill, taking a break from the clatter and commotion of Jakarta. This place is tiny – a true tropical island paradise that accommodates only about 20 visitors at a time. You’ll get to know your fellow guests during shared meals, or on a snorkeling cruise, or simply hanging out in the comfortable open air lounge.

Miraflores, Lima

Good eats

Lima doesn’t get a lot of love from the travel set, but it’s got an incredible dining scene – some of the best food I’ve ever eaten. Granted, not a lot of traditional tourist attractions in Lima, but not a bad place to spend a few days.
