McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum

Why I want to go to this place

This museum is in the same building where I work. How can I not go? Here’s why I haven’t. I always saw this museum as a marketing ploy by Tribune to give themselves a better image. But just recently I was looking at the museum at face value (forgetting my silly theories on why Tribune built it) and it looks like a VERY intriguing and insightful museum… one with a focus on freedom. Just how will the McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum define freedom?

American Science And Surplus

Under my nose all this time!

I’ve heard about this place before, and now that I see the address, I can’t believe it was under my nose this whole time! Every weekend I would go out to the Jefferson Park CTA station, and that’s at like, 4900 N. Milwaukee, just a mere four blocks south of American Science and Surplus!

Little Cubs Field

Why I want to go to this place

This guy is building a mini replica of Wrigley Field in Freeport, Illinois. It’s gonna be a little league field. How cool would that be to play baseball there?! Whiffleball tournies anyone?

After reading the Chicago Tribune article, “‘Honey, I’ve got a crazy idea’” and watching the video, this guy is really doing a great job building a smaller replica of wrigley field. Right down to matching the bricks exactly, even taking photos of the numbers on the outfield walls and photoshopping them into templates to get the exact font.

You gotta watch the video. Click the link above to view it.

Steve Bartman Seat

Why I want to go to this place

It would be interesting to see the game from the perspective of Steve Bartman at game 6 of playoffs (where the Chicago Cubs were just five outs away from going to the World Series).

When the incident originally occured, I was standing a mere 141 feet away.

I’ve been meaning to sit in his seat since last year when I blogged about it at: http://www.spudart.org/blogs/randomthoughts_comments/3466_0_3_0_C/

I almost sat in his seat once after a game, but there was a line of people waiting! And the seat isn’t even marked or anything, yet people KNOW it’s HIS seat.

Dick Tracy Museum

Why I want to go to this place

Dick Tracy is syndicated by Tribune Media Services (the company I’ve been working at since 2000). It just seems like one of the places I should go to.

Trump Tower

December 2007

“Unlike some high-rises underway, Trump is getting its glass as quickly as the concrete is poured. Good thing, too, since the hotel portion in the lowest segment of the 92-story tower is scheduled to open in December.” source: Keeping up on Trump Tower of yochicago.com.

It’s hard to believe that people will rent a room in a tower that is still under construction. A general rule of thumb is that people don’t like to stay at a hotel NEAR a construction site. I couldn’t imagine staying at a hotel that IS the construction site.

KVLY-TV Mast

Why I want to go to this place

This is the world’s tallest man-made structure on the Earth.

The KVLY-TV tower, 2,063 feet high, serves an area larger than the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Connecticut, with 1,000 square miles to spare. from http://www.kvlytv11.com/info/info_tower.html

The mast was surpassed in height by 18 m (57 ft) in 1974 by the Warszawa radio mast near Konstantynów, Poland, but the latter collapsed on August 8, 1991, making the KVLY mast again the tallest structure on land. from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KVLY-TV_mast

Its overall height above mean sea level is 926 m (3,038 ft). Some time after its completion, the Federal Aviation Administration imposed a limit of 2,063 ft, based on this tower’s height, on future construction; consequently, no taller structures may legally be built in the U.S. at present.

And the google map satelitte map.

Trump Tower

Why I want to go to this place

I want to go INSIDE the Trump Tower. You can’t really say you’ve been to the Trump Tower, unless you’ve been inside. I walk by this tower every weekday, I want to be one of the first people to go inside.

Although I’m not a big fan of the design of the building. Well, it’s alright. That’s just it. It’s alright. It certainly takes queues from the surrounding buildings, but it doesn’t have its own personality. Perhaps that will come when the building is complete.

Adams Plastics

Hours for Adams Plastics
What are their hours? I emailed them and got a response:

“We are open from 7-4:30 everday. Ask for Miles at the front desk.”

Looks like I’ll be going there before I go into work (or maybe the weekend).
