Todd Gehman asks,

“Where are the best places to take non-touristy photographs? Funky old neighboorhoods, interesting parks, crazy architecture, etc...”

John Flournoy answers,

The mission, yes. I would say some of the least photographed areas are around the postal center in the bay shore and hunters point area. If you want something non-touristy but quintessentially SF then uh I would definitely go with the mission, the De Young museum, and Market street Muni’s.

Strongest Recommendation: The Working Docks in South East SF.

CriminalSalt asks,

“Yippie! The tickets are purchased and the hotel booked; I'm so excited! I am wondering if any of you San Francisco folks, and perhaps even you fans of San Francisco, have some suggestions on a nice restaurant. I will be there over the Christmas holiday”

John Flournoy answers,

Unfortunately in North Beach you often pay for way more than you actually get in terms of food quality.

Aziza: Fabulous original Moroccan cuisine with heavy California influences. Damn tasty and not expensive. Far out in the Richmond.

Cha Cha Cha’s: Amazing Tapas, roaring atmosphere on the weekend. Go to the Mission location.

At both of these places the food is high quality, artfully prepared, and won’t blow a hole in your pocket.

If you’d like to blow a hole there though, go to Gary Danko’s. It’s worth it.

Ash~ creating wonder asks,

“I'm visiting in August, and I was wondering if anyone can recommend an awesome thrift/vintage store in SF?”

John Flournoy answers,

As you may have guessed, all you really need to do is wander around Valencia street (near 16th) and Haight street (near Masonic).

I also highly recommend the goodwill on Fillmore at Post, and on South Van Ness at Mission.

Hope you have fun!
