Osoyoos

Worth visiting!

A review of this place: Hawaii of Canada

Osoyoos has got to be the most underrated, undescovered gems of the Okanagan!
It is a great place to visit in the summer….great camping! Great weather – nice and hot but there is the lake to cool off in!
The community is quite nice, a mix of orchards and tourism…and it is BOOMING!
It has the “Spanish” theme going on there….with a lot of the businesses having Red tile roof and white stucco….
It is close enough to the U.S. border so you can nip down there for a beer and Mexican food.
I would highly recommmend a vacation here. It has got to be one of the best places to visit next to Penticton and Kelowna!

Oliver

Not worth visiting!

1970's

Every once in a while I will drive through the place – I spent 5 years going to highschool here…..and believe me, it isn’t a place you would want to spend much time in!
In the summer it can be hotter than hell and dusty …..the downtown is fairly dumpy and not much there. When the founding fathers built the place they decided to chop down all the trees so it really isn’t a very “green” place. Some of the trees were planted but esthetically speaking, I would keep driving down to Osoyoos. There are no real lakes to speak of…Tuc-el-nuit is just a puddle. Only stop for the wineries and orchards. You can get good prices right from the orchards – and best of all, the fruit is the best from Penticton on south to the border.
I could never get used to what Vancouverites call “fruit” in their produce sections of their grocery stores after eating fresh Okanagan fruit all my life!
Wander on up to Baldy Mountain…that is worth checking out…an up and coming ski hill that is still affordable to buy property.
Also check out Vasseaux Lake where there is a wild bird conservation and also Willowbrook…a community up in the hills above Oliver. Visit the White Lake observatory…very interesting.

Okanagan Falls

Not worth visiting!

I grew up here

I spent the first 20 years of my life here. There was much conflict between Ranchers and the “outsiders” from what I can remember. Because we were not really part of the “social scene” there, we were bad mouthed and my brother was beat up. Everyone did not want change and no matter how much my dad tried, the townsfolk would vote down any move to incorporate or improve the town, so it turned into a somewhat dumpy place. We were considered “outsiders” even though our family was there since 1962. Now they have no choice as there has been a huge influx of new arrivals!
The beach is ok, it is quieter than Penticton but there is not much to do there. Holiday Park Resort used to be the place to stay but now it has been let run down, and it is awaiting demolition to make way for new construction – condos…..
There are some very good wineries nearby, and that is about all I would go there for.
And – don’t bother looking for the falls. They were blasted out for flood control back in the 1940’s and there are only small rapids left now.
