Eastern State Penitentiary, Fairmount

Definitely make a trip

It’s historic, it’s spooky, it’s creepy, it’s run-down, it’s educational, it’s entertaining, it’s just awesome.

I suggest bringing the camera, the place is extremely photogenic. Of course I forgot mine when I went and the camera-phone doesn’t do it justice.

Mugshots is a great coffee/snack/juice bar across the street.

Jamestown, Newport County

wedding by the lighthouse

My husband and I were married at the tip of the Jamestown island, inside the Beavertail Lighthouse. The Town Hall was a quaint (possibly converted) house, with friendly clerks and visitors. We arrived to pick up the license dressed for the wedding, and were on our way to the ceremony site within a half hour. We’d plans to marry outside but it was overcast and windy that day, and we would have had to shout at each other. The staff at the lighthouse was so hospitable and accomodating, and helped us find a good spot inside.

Newport, Newport County

for our honeymoon

My husband and I were married in Jamestown but we stayed across the bridge in Newport during the last full week in May, the town wasn’t too crowded (too early for tourist season?). The food and the service at the Mooring (where we had our luncheon) was excellent, and the cake from Newport Gourmet didn’t survive a year in the freezer. The scenery was beautiful and the town extremely walkable. We didn’t visit the mansions but perhaps on another trip.
