Voodoo Doughnut, Old Town

Untitled

I wasn’t impressed. Granted, it was at 6:30 on a Sunday morning and I was on an early morning walk (visiting Portland that weekend), but honestly – I’ve had better doughnuts (I had a chocolate & peanut butter doughnut, my husband had an apple fritter). Besides, seeing a naked guy in the kitchen where food is being prepared has got to be some sort of health hazard!

Maybe it’s better at night, say after midnight. I’d like to go back and give it a second chance, but if I go back it’ll be for the ambience, not for the goodies.

Powell's City of Books, Pearl District

Untitled

I wasn’t sure what to expect. I love bookstores the way some people love nature walks. I get off on being surrounded by so much information and knowledge – I even visit libraries when I’m on vacation.

I’m always a little skeptical when I visit used bookstores. Most seem like musty, cramped places staffed by indifferent clerks who care more about the books than the people who are there to buy them. But not Powell’s.

When I walked in, it was if a choir of angels started singing. It was clean, neat, had brilliant wayfinding aids (maps, signage), and helpful staff who knew when to help and when to get out of your way and let serendipity take over. I intended to spend no more than $100 (USD) on the trip, and loved it so much that I spent twice that much — all on used books in excellent condition.

I used to be a devoted Amazon.com user – not anymore. From here on out, Powell’s will get all of my online bookselling business.

Crescent Moon Cafe, Decatur

Like the Flying Biscuit? Try Crescent Moon!

I tried this place on a recommendation from a local and was so glad I did. The portions are HUGE – you probably won’t be able to finish your breakfast platter – but the staff is friendly, the decor bright and funky, and the overall ambience is comfortable and welcoming.
