Ireland, Europe

samuel329 asks,

“what is the best time of year to visit Ireland?”

sipes23 answers,

We went in February, and aside from being nippy and a little cloudy, it was quite nice. Besides, the brisk weather made the warmth of pubs all the more enjoyable.

I think I’d go so far as to say that Ireland is a year-round destination.

Québec City, Québec Province

sipes23 asks,

“Will I be able to get by in the tourist areas if I don't speak French? I can manage to read simple written French, but spoken is another matter altogether.”

sipes23 answers,

That’s an always. Good advice to know at least a little bit of the local language. I can say hello and a few other very simple things in French, but not so much that I would pretent to speak it at all.

Thanks for the answer.

Spain, Europe

“I have never been to Europe before, but my grandmother who lived all over the world, including Madrid for 3 years, is taking me to Madrid in June of 07. She has not been to Spain since the early 80s', and I am looking for some advice on things to do, plac”

sipes23 answers,

I’d agree with this, but I’d really, really emphasize the Prado. It’s amazing.

Having been to the Chicago Art Institute many times, which is a top-notch art museum, I can tell you that it has NOTHING on the Prado.

One warning: There is very little English in the Prado, or I didn’t recall much. Any Spanish you know will help.

British Columbia, Canada

“Victoria or Vancouver? I've got one day to visit one of these from Seattle. I don't get seasick and might enjoy a ferry ride. Which do I choose?”

sipes23 answers,

That’s an idea I hadn’t thought of at all. Renting a bike would be a wonderful way to see what’s around.

sipes23 answers,

Yeah, I knew about the Victoria Clipper. That was what caused me to wonder about Victoria in the first place.

Watching planes land on water. That could be a cool way to spend lunch.

sipes23 answers,

Yeah, I heard that both places are cool, which I why I wanted to see what other folks thought.

And no, I don’t plan on forgetting Vancouver. I just don’t know that I’ll have time for both on this trip.

I’ll have to keep this in mind. I think I know what you mean by over-rated. Galena, Illinois, which is a weekend getaway for Chicago, is quaint and pleasant, but way over-rated. Nice enough to be sure, but once you’ve seen President Grant’s house and had lunch, there’s not much to do.
