The Museum Of Bad Art, Dedham

Maybe not a reason to go to Boston…

But if you’re already in Boston this is a fun pit stop to make. This is a really small museum in a movie theater’s basement. And the art is just horrendously bad. Truly, the name is what it is.

The art isn’t bad in the sense that it’s not your style or taste. It might not even be bad in the sense of incompetent technique: certainly, I’m capable of this kind of art. No. While bad technique may be part of the mix, it isn’t required. It is usually the work of someone who is trying for high art and missing the bar in a cringeworthy style.

What can I say? You’ve just got to see it to believe it.

Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, Whitefish Point Light Station

Way remote

This museum is at the end of the road, and it isn’t some major highway. It’s a road taking people to summer cabins.

The museum is divided between several buildings on the old Coast Guard station at Whitefish Point. It is filled with volunteers who do a good job of explaining what is on display. Despite the remote location and narrow focus, it’s quite interesting. And then when you’re done looking at the boats, you can check out the beach.

Aztalan State Park, Wisconsin

Pre-beer Wisconsin

Aztalan State Park was the site of a native village in the 11th century. It’s not as big or famous a Cahokia Mounds, but if you’re curious about such things and in the neighborhood, it’s worth a visit.

If the season and timing is right, stop by the Aztalan Historical Museum just north of the state park.
