A review of this place: Large Portions, Decent Food, and Relatively Cheap

Long lineups at night, which is why I only ever go either for lunch or get takeout. Large portions, decent food (not the greatest, but it’s good), and relatively cheap. There’s a longer review at SFU’s The Peak.

A review of this place: Even Though Secretly I Was Too Full

My review from February 2005 still stands (I’ve been a few times since, for dinner): “The food was excellent: I had the lamb vindaloo with naan bread which was very spicy and very tasty. The ambiance was just right, not upscale but still comfortable: nice art, hip music (but not too hip!) and the lighting was just right. Also, the two servers we had were non-intrusive and both very pretty. One had an English accent, so I thoughfully indicated interest when she mentioned dessert, only to hear her voice while she talked about the menu, even though secretly I was too full.”

International Departures

All of my trips out of the airport have been domestic flights (except one, years ago), but I like hanging out in the international departures wing if I have the time. That’s because of the cool statues which kids are not allowed to climb but always do, the open space in the food court, and people-watching those lining up for Japan Air and other flights using Asian airlines. It’s either that or eat a BC Burger and watch sports on the multiple TVs at the White Spot. Plus there’s (expensive) wifi.

Grumble

The last two trips out of Pearson make me grumble. The grumble for today is slowness in letting me through the security gate, not for anything I had done but because of the two people in front of me they asked to take off their shoes. (One of whom budged in front of me.) The other grumble is about them taking my fingernail scissors, which were both perfect and expensive, and not-still never, either going from or to Vancouver-my small el cheapo screwdriver, which is equally sharp and dangerous.

That, and there’s no wifi Internet in Terminal 3 (AFAIK).

The Small (and Fast!) Ferris Wheel

Except for the many mosquitos, I enjoyed walking around, going on the swings, and riding on the small (and fast!) ferris wheel. Next time I’m going on the train though: that looks like fun!

Get the Butter Chicken

On Church and Wellesley just off Yonge. See also the review they have posted outside the restaurant. I think I liked the surprisngly-and pleasantly so-spicy butter chicken with pita bread my dinner companion (my lovely girlfriend) had more than the spaghetti bolognese I had.

Obstructed View

My girlfriend and I had obstructed view tickets to the Sigur Rós concert on May 13th, and the concert was excellent (amazing sound!). They didn’t play “Svefn-g-englar” which was a surprise, but otherwise a great performance at a great venue.

Great Wraps

I usually get either the chicken, lamp or beef wrap, always spicy, and always with fries. Sometimes the fries are enough for a meal and I save the wrap for later. See Roland’s photo of the falafel for an idea of the food they serve.

Cute Or Shiny (Or Both!)

Everything is Japanese (including the music they play and the announcements, though they helpfully come in English beforehand) and costs 2 dollars each. I bought a stand-up mirror, two whiteboards (one large, one small: there doesn’t seem to be a medium size for anything in the store) and some chopsticks and a chopstick stand. Many cute or shiny (or both!) things there!

All The Lonely People

Nice atmosphere, good food, the deserts (we shared three types of cake—chocolate layer cake, chocholate espresso cheesecake, and pecan carrot cake—among 6 people) and a jazz band at 7 PM. At least when I went there: they covered The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” at one point. The band was a little bit too loud for conversation, but on the other hand, they were too loud for anybody to hear me singing, out of tune no doubt, “all the lonely people / where do they all come from?”. I was a little confused that I had to exit a different way than I came in, as the band played right at the front door.
