We went to St. Louis on a limited budget this summer (2005). It is an excellent city to take a family to. There are several awesome attractions. The St. Louis Zoo was free and it was a really great zoo. The exhibits were really wonderful and quite close together (no hiking for miles like you have to do at the KC Zoo). There is a science center which has a really neat enclosed walking bridge that spans an interstate highway (complete with radar guns so you can see how fast the cars below you are going). It was free also and had lots of hands-on interactive exhibits and displays for the children to play with. There are also several other free attractions that we simply didn’t have time to do.
Don’t forget to visit the wild and zany “City Museum.” The inaptly-named crazyhouse is one place you don’t want to miss, whether you are an adult or a child. Not free, and not cheap, but well worth the experiences.
The city itself had a really cool vibe. Traffic was interesting, particularly when we were attempting to leave the city and go home west on I-70, but all in all a great spot.
The picture of my son was taken from the deck of the “Tom Sawyer,” a tour “steamboat.” Relaxing and interesting.
