The abbey of Mont St. Michel is definitely worth visiting and the views from the top of the mount over the rest of the island and the sea around are just awesome.

One tip tho’ avoid this place like the plague during the month of August. The tourists are so many, you’ll just be swept along with the crowd and you won’t get to see anything. I like the mount best during winter. I admit that it is bitterly cold but it is really romantic, and spooky and you feel like you’ve gone back about 800 years in the past.

And after a long invigorating walk (don’t forget to walk thru the cemetary in the late evening just for the added chill in your bones) stop in the village below the abbey for a big cup of hot chocolate or some of the breton/normand food.

The mount is so much better seen this way than in the heat of a summer afternoon with snaphappy tourists milling around. The romance of the place is completely lost that way.

Really beautiful and peaceful inspite of the tourists. Unbeliveable sense of space. Nice, if overpriced, cafés on the piazza. Don’t miss the fantastic icecream at Giolitti. When you get out of the Pantheon and you’re facing the piazza take the road going off to the right towards the back of the piazza. Giolitti’s gelato is definitely the best I’ve ever tasted and the sheer variety of flavours is astounding. Hint: The amareno cherry flavour is divine.

Go very early in the morning or very late at night. The fountain may not be on but at least you can appreciate the beautiful carvings without having 300 people step on your toes.
