I absolutely LOVE the Outer Banks and plan to make that our yearly vacation spot. We went down this year the week before Memorial Day and that seems to be just the right time. It’s warm enough on the southern beaches to swim and the beaches aren’t crowded yet because it’s not the “in-season” which you’re only missing by a week. The one down side to going at this time of year is some of the attractions aren’t open and will open the following week.
One other thing that is wonderful for this area is the weekly rental properties. We rented a house for 4 families last year that was actually bigger than what we needed and only paid 300 per family. This year we’re going on our own and renting a house for $290 for an entire week and that’s only a lot back from the beach :)

This place was unbelievable and I didn’t even make it all of the way over. I was a bit dehydrated the day we went and we had our 2 year old with us. We went over about 4 dunes, everyone we thought was the 4th one we decided to call it quits.. :) Next year, we’re gonna make it though!
