Taj Mahal, Agra

An Awe-Inspiring Structure

And an amazing love story too … the ruler had the Taj Mahal built as a memorial to his beloved wife, and had plans for a mirror image of the Taj to be built across the river in black, so that they would rest in peace, gazing at each other for all eternity. Alas, the ruler’s son had him imprisoned before construction ever began on his memorial.

What you can’t see in any photos is the beauty of the precious and semi-precious stone inlay all over the entire building … it is absolutely beautiful, and if you get the chance to see the Taj at sunrise or sunset, it literally glows with the captured light.

Phoenix, Arizona

Odd, yet interesting ...

I can’t say why, but I found Phoenix intersting. Probably because every house I passed had at least one cactus plant in it’s yard, and everything else was rock …

Portland, Oregon

A Town You Gotta Love

Okay, I’m biased, I grew up in the general metro area around Portland and I have to say, after travelling all over the world, there’s just something about Portland that keeps it small, lively and surprising through the years.

We have some pretty gray, wet winters, but come springtime, this place comes to life, quite literally. Portland is one of the greenest cities I’ve seen, with great pedestrian areas, a fantastic public transit system, and easy access to the Pacific Ocean to the west and great mountain skiing to the east, plus kayaking, hiking, boating, fishing, camping … you name it, it’s here.

Add to all that some great local wine, microbrews, and shopping without a sales tax (!) and you’ve got a great destination for it all.

If you want a great place to get away from a bigger town, yet don’t want to feel like you’ve left civilization completely behind, come to Portland and sit a spell.
