Grand Marais, Minnesota
worth the drive
it’s pretty and worth the drive thru the north country (in the summer, that is) . . . great sunsets, too. bring your camera, quite
a lot of photo ops.

i have been here many times since my first visit to JA in ‘85 and used to love it . . . however, last trip we discovered Mayfield Falls and would highly recommend it instead of dunns river falls. excellent ! ! great drive getting there (quite far). way less touristy and cleaner and just all around better falls. different in that it’s not such a straight up climb as dunn’s river but you’re in a rain forest and it’s unbelieveable. we encountered a rain/lightening/thunderstorm the last 20 minutes or so in the water and that was unforgetable . . . once in a lifetime experience. would do it again, for sure.
over 5 years agoit’s quite a far distance to get there but along the way you’ll see lots of the real jamaica. lots of hills and greenery. i don’t think many people venture up there on their own but it is worth it. nine mile is inpiring cuz it really is where bob marley grew up and you can feel the true spirit of jamaica there. not the touristy nonsense but the real vibe. farms and things are there to see and cows and goats. stop in browns town and see the market where luciano used to sell. allow plenty time to get back to where you are staying. driving at night can be tricky and not for the faint of heart.
