A rumor about this place
I heard an interesting thing about Tsuwano.
If you have not been there, the city has an interesting feature, in that most of the roads have shallow canals along them. These canals are filled with carp, and this is a big part of the tourism draw to Tsuwano. I heard that this carp-stocked canal system goes back to the feudal period, when it was a defense against attack. A common strategy back then was to surround and starve out villages to weaken them.
So the Tsuwano carp once existed as an emergency food supply, and now they draw in tourists by the busload. Even if they were never needed as a food source in the past, they are certainly putting food on the table for the people in Tsuwano now…
