Amsterdam, Montgomery County
Amsterdam New York
is located in eastern Montgomery county along the Mohawk River. An old D.O.T. trail, a canal path, and a bike trail are on the southern bank of the Mohawk. Along the northern bank are Russo’s tavern, the Amtrak station, and the mall. A short distance from downtown are the Walter Elwood Museum, the Sassafras woods, two cemetaries, St. Mary’s Hospital, and route five west leading towards Fonda and Utica. East of downtown are Riverlink Park and Centro Civico and the Rock Motel, and route five east leading towards Schenectady and Albany. There are too many churches, not enough restaurants, and a very small haunted bridge. Amsterdam does have definite history. In its’ heyday it was referred to as “The Rug City” because of the carpet mills. Now some people would argue that it is a dieing little town and it just might be at that. Amsterdam is bordered by Perth and Broadalbin to the north, Scotia to the east, Cranesville to the south, and Tribes Hill to the west.
