Taroko Gorge

(in Taiwan)

Worth visiting!

Dreamy Rain

I had no expectations upon going there, but I was very satisfied with the place. The marble gorges are abstract and twisty, the local aboriginal food is fresh and yummy, and the photo opportunities all around the gorge are limitless. The best part about when I went (November a few years back) was the light rain/fog – the guide called it 夢夢雨 – dreamy rain. I’m sure there are dry times to go as well, but I didn’t mind the damp – it made the whole place sort of weirdly mythical. There’s a beach around there when you can pick up some marble pebbles as souvenirs – better than trying to carry back some huge carving of something…

Creepy fun :) A bit of a walk from the train station, but we stalked a group of kids on a field trip until we got there. Be sure to take time to look at the cemetary outside, too.

Berlin

Guess I’m cheating here, cuz I only actually went to Berlin, but it was awesome :) We were there during Easter weekend, so the place was more full of tourists than anything. Here are the bars I went to – all worth a try: Greenwich, Delicious Donuts, communist themed Verkehrs Beruhigte Ost Zone (VEBOZ?), Kaffe Burger. Prost!

Praha

Gorgeous

Went to Prague with a Contiki tour group (which 18-35 year-olds should definitely give a shot!). My first real view of the place was in the dark, but even then I was taken by the beauty of it. The entire place is like the setting for every fairy tale ever told!

It’s exhausting, but everyone should definitely climb the 287 steps up the St. Vitus’s Cathedral Grand Tower for the amazing view. If you’re feeling particularly ambitious (and didn’t just take a wrong turn like we did), go up the Old Castle Steps, too :)

Sweden

Worth visiting!

Hej :)

Just got back from Eurotrip that included Stockholm. Didn’t get to see the rest of Sweden, but if the capital is any indication of the rest of the country, I’m completely in love! Maybe the reason I loved this place even more than the others I’ve visited on my trip is because I got to stay with my friend Marcus and got a less touristy point of view :) Some cool not-in-guidebook things I remember: Indiska store in Gamla Stan with the labyrintine basement; playing local lawn game “Kubb” with friends; eating kroppkakor “body cakes” and desserts with handpicked blueberries; going up to the Gondola restaurant on Sömermalm for an amazing night view of the city and the funny, antiquated toothpaste ad made of animated light bulbs; taking a brunch cruise (with about 8 different kinds of herring) to Vaxholm… I’d go back in a hearbeat!

Dallas

Worth visiting!

Big D

I’ve lived in a suburb of Dallas almost all my life, but it wasn’t until I started working downtown that I started to notice more of the city itself. Yes, it can be conservative and uber-yuppy, but it can be a pretty cool place, too. It helps that the downtown area is reviving bit by bit. There are nice public spaces and a huuuuge range of places to eat and shop. If you’re visiting, just rent a car and ask the friendly Texans around you for places to check out. If you live here and wonder what the big deal is (like I do sometimes), just take a minute to look around – it’s not so bad :)

I hear there’s some ancient and spectacular tournament of horsemen in masquerade in late Feb at Oristano. It’s called Sartiglia. I want to see it!!

Didn't see enough - want to go back

Took a week long tour there back in 2001 – it so wasn’t enough! So much is packed into a tiny bit of land – didn’t eat enough, didn’t see enough, didn’t do enough. I speak Mandarin pretty well, but I’ll have to make sure to find a Cantonese speaker to get a real “in” to the place.

Work related road trip took me to 5 cities around the state. There’s only so much “amber waves of grain” a girl can take…
