Tucson, Arizona

I liked the campus area and the parks

Smaller town than I was expecting, but the area around the University of Arizona was kind of cool… (4th St/Ave? pretty hip/alternative). I also loved that huge snake pedestrian/bicycle overpass… ;)

I also liked driving to the east end of Broadway, and the west end of Speedway… where you hit bits of (what I now understand to be) Saguaro National Park.

Phoenix, Arizona

Good as a cold-weather getaway

I used the comments here on 43 places on a recent trip to Phoenix, and found them to be really helpful!

Overall, I found the city to be a wacky cross between (my admittedly limited impressions of) Los Angeles and Dallas. You drive a lot, people seem to spend a lot of time inside air-conditioned malls… there’s lots of space but perhaps that leads to a bit of sprawl. The landscape is beautiful. I really liked driving around the “peaks” of what I guess is known as “Paradise Valley”, definitely recommended.

Los Angeles, Los Angeles County

Didn’t live up to all the hype, but was interesting nonetheless. Be prepared to spend a lot of time in a car!
